On October 17, 2025, at the Hîncești Ecological Station of the Institute of Ecology and Geography of the Moldova State University, a new automatic meteorological station was inaugurated, installed with the support of the Government of Japan and the United Nations Development Programme Moldova, in partnership with the State Hydrometeorological Service.
The agrometeorological station is named in honor of Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences, Doctor Habilitated, University Professor Maria NEDEALCOV, founder of the Hîncești Ecological Station and promoter of research on climatic processes and their impact on the environment and agriculture in the Republic of Moldova.
The event brought together representatives of the Ministry of Environment, the State Hydrometeorological Service, UNDP Moldova, the Embassy of Japan, local public authorities, and the scientific community, who emphasized the importance of strengthening the hydrometeorological observation network and advancing scientific research in the context of climate change.
The station is equipped with high-precision sensors capable of monitoring air temperature and humidity, wind speed and direction, precipitation amount and intensity, as well as solar radiation. Thanks to these technologies, approximately 10,000 residents of the Hîncești District, including farmers, public authorities, and local institutions, will benefit from accurate and real-time meteorological data, essential for agricultural planning and informed decision-making.
Through the inauguration of this modern station, the Institute of Ecology and Geography of the State University of Moldova continues the scientific and educational legacy promoted by Professor Maria Nedealcov, reaffirming its commitment to environmental monitoring, climate research, and the sustainable development of the Republic of Moldova.
